Picking the Right Topic Type for Your Question

As you write your question make sure you pick the right topic type based on the data you want back from your community members. Keep in mind how participants might engage with your question as well.

Instant Poll

Participants select from a list of answers, similar to a closed-ended survey question. Aggregate results are displayed as soon as their selection is submitted.

This topic type has an over 90% response rate from participants and all sites should have a poll when launching their site.

Idea Submission

Participants are presented with a question and are asked to submit ideas. Other participants can rate the ideas they support and comment on the ideas.

This topic type helps to gather a broad range of user-defined ideas from the community on a particular interest area.

Photo Share

Participants are presented with a question/statement and are asked to upload a photo. Photos can be given tags.

This topic type is useful when asking for inspiration or visual ideas.

Survey

A survey is a list of questions that must be answered in a prescribed sequence.

This topic type is most appropriate if you want to capture lots of open-ended or close-ended information from participants.

Idea Submission (with map)

Participants are presented with a question and are asked to pin their ideas based upon a map you set.

This topic type is most appropriate if you want to capture specific location of issue/interest.

Challenge

Ask an open-ended question so that participants can offer up solutions. The best ideas are then turned over to a judge or committee, and a winning idea is selected and implemented.

This topic type is appropriate if you want a community to rally around a problem or challenge. The participant with the “winning” idea is typically offered a prize.

Budget Allocation

Allow participants to provide their own suggestions as to where to spend the budget. An allocation offers them a chance to set their own priorities.

This topic type is appropriate if you want a community to pick the budget items.
